Cancun to Puerto Vallarta 2026: Flights, Times & What to Know

Cancun to Puerto Vallarta is a 2-hour direct flight — two of Mexico’s top beach destinations connected by one of the most convenient domestic routes in the country. Volaris, VivaAerobus, and Aeromexico all fly nonstop between CUN and PVR, with fares starting around 900 MXN booked in advance.

Traveling from Cancun to Puerto Vallarta makes sense for several reasons: you might be doing a Mexico coastal loop (Caribbean + Pacific), you’ve finished your Cancun leg during Semana Santa and want to escape the crowds, or you’re simply comparing Mexico’s two most popular beach resorts.

This guide covers every option, what Uber does at PVR airport (spoiler: walk 100 meters), and one key thing to know about Ley Seca if you’re traveling during Semana Santa.

Via AIFA (NLU)5–7 hrs total900–2,500 MXNBudget seekers, CDMX north residents

Bottom line: Fly direct. Cancun–Puerto Vallarta is a well-served route. No reason to connect unless you want a Mexico City stopover.

VivaAerobus900–2,000 MXNNo — add online
Aeromexico1,400–3,500 MXNYes — first bag

Flight time: Approximately 2 hours
Frequency: Typically 1–3 direct departures daily (varies by season)
Departs from: CUN — Cancun International Airport, Terminals 2, 3, or 4
Arrives at: PVR — Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport, 7 km north of Nuevo Vallarta / 15 km north of the Romantic Zone

At CUN Airport

  • Check-in: Budget carriers charge 300–700 MXN for checked bags added at the airport — add online at booking to save.
  • Uber at CUN: Uber is banned from picking up at the terminal curb. Use the authorized taxi desk (SITEUR fixed-rate taxis) inside Terminals 2/3 or take the official shuttle. See our Cancun airport transportation guide for full details.
  • Terminal note: Volaris/VivaAerobus typically depart from T3; Aeromexico from T2. Check your ticket.

Arriving at PVR Airport

Puerto Vallarta’s airport is compact and easy to navigate. The key thing most guides get wrong: Uber is technically banned from picking up at the curb due to taxi union agreements.

The workaround: Walk 100 meters outside the terminal exit toward the Carretera Aeropuerto road, then request an Uber. Fares are significantly cheaper than official taxis and the walk takes 2 minutes. Most experienced travelers do this automatically.

SETAVI official taxis are also available inside the terminal at fixed rates:

DestinationOfficial Taxi (SETAVI)
Romantic Zone (Old Town)250–350 MXN
Hotel Zone (north)180–250 MXN
Nuevo Vallarta / Bucerias300–450 MXN
Sayulita500–700 MXN
Punta Mita600–800 MXN

Option 2: Via Mexico City

Los Muertos Beach in Puerto Vallarta Romantic Zone — reachable from Cancun by connecting flight

Connecting through Mexico City’s MEX airport adds 2–4 hours to your journey but can make sense if:

  • Direct fares are significantly higher on your travel date
  • You want a Mexico City stopover (turn the connection into a 1–2 day visit)
  • Your booking platform shows better combined pricing on connecting routes

Airlines: Aeromexico has the strongest MEX hub network; Volaris and VivaAerobus also connect at MEX.

AIFA alternative: Mexico City’s second airport (Felipe Ángeles, AIFA) is 50 km north of the city and serves mainly budget carriers. Check if your routing goes through NLU vs MEX — they require different ground transfers.

Option 3: Is There a Bus?

Cancun Caribbean beach — the starting point before heading to Puerto Vallarta's Pacific coast

No. There is no direct ADO or first-class bus from Cancun to Puerto Vallarta. The land distance exceeds 2,200 km and crosses multiple states. A theoretical bus route would require connections in Mexico City and take 24+ hours. For all practical purposes, this route only makes sense by air.

What to Know About Puerto Vallarta vs Cancun

These are Mexico’s two most popular beach destinations, but they’re meaningfully different:

FactorCancunPuerto Vallarta
OceanCaribbean (east-facing)Pacific (west-facing)
SargassumSeasonal (Apr–Oct risk)None ever — structural advantage
UberBanned at airport, works in cityBanned at airport curb, works in city with 100m walk
Ley Seca (Semana Santa)None — Quintana Roo exemptYes — Holy Thu + Good Fri in Jalisco
Beach swimmingSafe in Hotel ZoneSafe on most beaches
Whale watchingWhale sharks Jun–Sep (Holbox)Humpbacks Dec–Mar (600+)
VibeParty resort, internationalMore Mexican charm, walkable Old Town

The biggest practical difference for beach travelers: Puerto Vallarta never gets sargassum. The Pacific coast orientation means zero seaweed issues year-round. If you’re coming from a Cancun trip during sargassum season (April–October), PVR feels immediately different.

Semana Santa: Ley Seca Warning

Puerto Vallarta Malecón boardwalk — during Semana Santa 2026, Jalisco Ley Seca applies

If you’re traveling during Semana Santa 2026 (March 29–April 5), there’s one key difference between these two destinations:

Cancun (Quintana Roo): No Ley Seca. Bars, clubs, restaurants, and stores can sell alcohol every day during Semana Santa, including Good Friday. This is why Cancun is the most popular Semana Santa beach destination for Mexicans traveling from states with dry laws.

Puerto Vallarta (Jalisco): Ley Seca applies on Holy Thursday, April 2 and Good Friday, April 3. No alcohol sales those two days at any venue. Restaurants with food service can sometimes serve alcohol with meals depending on their license, but most bars and clubs are closed.

The practical effect: if you land in Puerto Vallarta on April 2 or 3, you won’t find a drink at most places. Plan accordingly — buy supplies before.

From the Airport: Getting to Puerto Vallarta

Once you land at PVR, here are your options:

Uber (recommended for most): Walk 100 meters outside the terminal to the road. Request Uber from there. Costs 150–250 MXN to Romantic Zone, 100–180 MXN to Hotel Zone north. Takes 20–40 minutes depending on destination.

SETAVI official taxis: Fixed-rate taxis inside the terminal. More expensive than Uber but no hassle. Prices posted at the taxi desk.

Private transfer: Hotels and Airbnbs in Sayulita, Punta Mita, and other Riviera Nayarit destinations often arrange airport pickups. Worth it for those areas — Uber pricing gets expensive and the roads can be tricky at night.

Rental car: PVR has all major rental companies inside the terminal. Renting is worth it if you plan to explore Riviera Nayarit (Sayulita, La Cruz, Bucerias, Punta Mita) independently. The coastal road north is straightforward.

What to Do in Puerto Vallarta

Cancún to Puerto Vallarta Cancún day trips hero

Puerto Vallarta rewards slower travel more than Cancun does. The Romantic Zone (Zona Romántica) is the walkable historic heart — cobblestone streets, independent restaurants, the best nightlife scene in the city, and Playa Los Muertos as the main public beach.

Key things not to miss:

  • Whale watching Dec–Mar: 600+ humpback whales in Banderas Bay — one of the highest concentrations in the world
  • Marietas Islands: Hidden beach accessible only by swimming through a tunnel; requires permits and organized tours (200-person daily limit)
  • El Salado estuary: Urban crocodile habitat 15 minutes from the Hotel Zone — free to visit
  • Malecón sculpture walk: Free outdoor art gallery along the beachfront
  • No sargassum: The Pacific coast has structural advantages — zero seaweed year-round

Planning Your Mexico Beach Route

If you’re visiting both Cancun and Puerto Vallarta on one Mexico trip, the most efficient routing is:

  1. Fly into CUN, explore Riviera Maya (7–10 days)
  2. Fly CUN→PVR (2 hours), explore Puerto Vallarta + Riviera Nayarit (5–7 days)
  3. Fly PVR→home

Or reverse it. Both CUN and PVR have direct connections to major US and Canadian cities, so you don’t need to return to the same airport you landed at.

Compare the two destinations: Our Cancun vs Puerto Vallarta guide breaks down every difference including sargassum, safety, family travel, and nightlife to help you decide which deserves more of your time.
