Mexico City to Playa del Carmen 2026: 4 Ways to Get There
Mexico City to Playa del Carmen is a two-step journey: fly to Cancun (1.5 hrs), then bus or colectivo south (45–75 min). There’s no airport in Playa del Carmen. Door-to-door: 3.5–4.5 hours.
The Short Answer
No direct flights exist to Playa del Carmen. Fly MEX→CUN, then bus south — that’s the route. Here’s every option broken down.
At a Glance: Mexico City to Playa del Carmen
| Option | Total Time | Cost (MXN) | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fly MEX→CUN + ADO bus | 3.5–4.5 hrs | 1,100–2,500 | Most travelers, airport arrival |
| Fly MEX→CUN + Maya Train | 3.5–4.5 hrs | 1,200–2,800 | T4 arrivals, train enthusiasts |
| Fly MEX→CUN + colectivo | 3.5–4.5 hrs | 900–2,000 | Budget travelers without luggage |
| Overnight bus TAPO→PDC | 24–26 hrs | 900–1,400 | Only if you can’t fly |
Option 1: Fly MEX→CUN + ADO Bus (Recommended)
This is the standard route. Book flights and bus tickets separately — there are no combined packages worth buying.
Step 1: Fly Mexico City to Cancun
Airlines: VivaAerobus (cheapest), Volaris, Aeromexico, Interjet alternatives Flight time: 1 hour 30 minutes Cost: 800–3,500 MXN one-way (booked 2–4 weeks ahead = lower range) Airport: Depart from MEX (Benito Juárez) — not AIFA (Felipe Ángeles). Most PDC-bound flights use MEX.
AIFA caveat: Felipe Ángeles Airport (AIFA) is 50km northeast of CDMX and offers fewer CUN routes. Check your ticket carefully — AIFA and MEX are not interchangeable and require very different pre-airport logistics.
Booking tip: VivaAerobus and Volaris often have CUN routes from 800–1,200 MXN midweek booked 3+ weeks out. Peak season (Semana Santa, Christmas, summer) sees 2,500–4,000 MXN fares.
Step 2: ADO Bus from Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen
From Terminal 3 or 4: ADO runs direct buses to Playa del Carmen’s ADO station on Juárez Avenue. Journey time: 45–60 minutes Cost: 232 MXN (from airport) / 152–200 MXN (from downtown Cancun) Frequency: Every 30–60 minutes throughout the day Arrival in PDC: ADO station on Calle 12bis, 10-minute walk from 5th Avenue and the beach
No transfer needed. The ADO bus from the airport drops you directly in central Playa del Carmen — far easier than taking a Cancun city bus.
Important PDC Arrival Notes
- No Uber in Playa del Carmen. Taxi unions have successfully blocked Uber and DiDi from operating in PDC. From the ADO station, use registered taxi stands (agree price before getting in) or walk if your hotel is near 5th Avenue.
- Walk to the beach: The ADO station on Calle 12bis is walkable to most central PDC accommodation. 5th Avenue starts at Calle 1 — about a 10-minute walk from the bus station.
Option 2: Fly MEX→CUN + Maya Train
The Maya Train (Tren Maya) runs from Cancun Airport Terminal 4 directly south toward Playa del Carmen. This option works best if your flight lands at T4 — but check which terminal first.
How It Works
- Fly MEX→CUN and exit at Terminal 4 (or take the free inter-terminal shuttle from T2/T3)
- Follow signs to Tren Maya station inside Terminal 4
- Buy tickets at the kiosk (248–492 MXN depending on seat class)
- Take the train south — arrives at Playa del Carmen station in about 35–45 minutes
Maya Train Practical Notes
| Factor | Reality |
|---|---|
| Cost | 248–492 MXN (Turista/Turista Plus) |
| Time from CUN Airport | 35–45 min to PDC station |
| PDC station location | Northern edge of town (~15 min walk or taxi to center) |
| Schedule | Hourly departures roughly 5 AM–11 PM |
| Terminal requirement | Starts at T4 — T2/T3 arrivals need free shuttle |
Worth it? If you arrive at T4, yes — it’s comfortable and scenic. If you arrive at T2 or T3 (most international and domestic flights), the inter-terminal shuttle adds 20–30 minutes and the ADO bus becomes simpler.
Option 3: Fly MEX→CUN + Colectivo
Budget option for travelers with manageable luggage and a flexible attitude.
How colectivos work: Shared minivans run along Highway 307 from Cancun to PDC (and beyond to Tulum). They’re cheap, frequent, and slower than ADO due to stops.
Getting the colectivo from the airport: Colectivos don’t run directly from CUN Airport. You need to:
- Take an authorized taxi or ADO bus from the airport into downtown Cancun (~30 min, 400–600 MXN taxi / 75 MXN ADO)
- Find colectivos on Avenida Tulum or near the ADO downtown station
- Colectivo to PDC: 75–100 MXN, departs when full, journey 50–75 minutes
Best for: Travelers arriving in downtown Cancun or those who have already reached the Cancun bus station. Not ideal if starting from the airport — the airport-downtown taxi adds cost and time that erases the savings.
Option 4: Overnight Bus TAPO→Playa del Carmen
ADO and OCC operate direct overnight buses from TAPO (Terminal de Autobuses de Pasajeros de Oriente) in eastern Mexico City.
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Departure terminal | TAPO (NOT Terminal Norte, NOT Terminal Poniente) |
| Arrival in PDC | ADO station on Calle 12bis |
| Duration | 24–26 hours |
| Cost | 900–1,400 MXN |
| Seat types | Regular / GL (reclinable) / Platinum (lie-flat on some routes) |
When to consider it: If you have large equipment (surfboards, bikes, musical instruments), if you’re traveling on extreme budget, or if you actually enjoy long-distance buses. For everyone else — fly.
Booking: Buy at tapo.com.mx, adogl.com.mx, or the TAPO terminal directly. Book at least 5 days ahead for Semana Santa travel.
