Cancun to Ek Balam 2026: Every Way to Get There (Bus, Car & Day Trip Guide)

Ek Balam is 172km from Cancun — about the same distance as Chichen Itza, but with a fraction of the crowds and one major advantage: you can still climb the pyramid. The Acropolis at Ek Balam (32m / 105ft) is fully climbable in 2026, with original stucco jaguar masks and carved friezes at the summit that no other Yucatan ruin can show you up close.

There’s no direct bus. All routes go through Valladolid (17km from the ruins). Here’s every option, what it costs, and how to make the most of the day.

Driving is the best way to reach Ek Balam from Cancun. It gives you full flexibility — you decide when to arrive, how long to stay, and whether to add Chichen Itza, a cenote, or Valladolid to the day.

Route: Cancun → Highway 180D (toll road) → Valladolid → Highway 295 north → Ek Balam

Distance: 172km, about 2 hours non-stop

Tolls:

  • Cancun to Valladolid via 180D: ~140 MXN
  • Valladolid to Ek Balam (Hwy 295): no tolls

Where to pick up: Cancun International Airport has all major rental agencies (Hertz, Avis, Budget, National). Book in advance — availability disappears during Semana Santa and spring break.

Parking at Ek Balam: Free parking lot directly at the site entrance.

The Ek Balam + Chichen Itza Full Day

This is the best single-day ruins combo in the Yucatan:

TimeActivity
8:00 AMArrive Ek Balam (ruins open). Light crowds, cool morning.
8:00-10:30 AMExplore Ek Balam: Acropolis climb, Twin Pyramid, Oval Palace
11:00 AMDrive 50km southwest to Chichen Itza via Valladolid
11:30 AMLunch in Valladolid (Mercado Municipal, 40-80 MXN/plate)
12:30 PMArrive Chichen Itza (~30,000 daily visitors by this point)
12:30-3:00 PMChichen Itza — El Castillo, Ball Court, El Caracol observatory
3:30 PMCenote Ik Kil (3km from Chichen Itza ruins, 180 MXN entry)
5:30-6:30 PMReturn to Cancun on Highway 180D

Note: If you want less heat at Chichen Itza, reverse the order — but you’ll hit more crowds at Ek Balam mid-day.

Option 2: ADO Bus + Taxi

The best public-transport option. ADO runs direct Cancun → Valladolid buses frequently; from Valladolid, taxis reach Ek Balam in 25 minutes.

Step 1: ADO from Cancun to Valladolid

  • Depart: Cancun ADO terminal (downtown, near Puerto Juárez) or the CUN Airport bus stop
  • Fare: 200-260 MXN
  • Duration: ~2 hours
  • Frequency: Hourly departures from 6 AM onward
  • First bus: 6:00 AM from downtown Cancun — arrive Valladolid ~8 AM (good timing for ruins)

Step 2: Taxi Valladolid → Ek Balam

  • Distance: 17km north of Valladolid center
  • Cost: 100-120 MXN one-way (negotiate round-trip: 250-300 MXN total, driver waits 1.5-2 hrs)
  • Duration: 25 minutes
  • Note: No colectivo runs directly to Ek Balam. Agree on a round-trip with waiting time before leaving.

Total cost: 300-380 MXN per person (~$15-20 USD)

Tip: Ask your Valladolid taxi driver to wait while you visit the ruins. Agree on a time (2 hours is comfortable) and price before entering. Most drivers are experienced with this arrangement.

Option 3: Organized Day Tour

Guided tours from Cancun combine Ek Balam with a cenote swim and often include Valladolid city time. The most popular combo: Ek Balam + Cenote Maya (a private cenote near the ruins with minimal crowds vs. the Ik Kil circus).

What’s typically included:

  • Hotel pickup in Cancun (Hotel Zone and downtown)
  • Transportation in air-conditioned van
  • Entrance fees to ruins
  • Cenote swim
  • Spanish-speaking or bilingual guide
  • Lunch (some tours)

Price: $60-90 USD (cenote combo) / $90-120 USD (private tours)

Duration: 8-9 hours door-to-door

Best booking window: 1-3 days in advance. During Semana Santa (March 29 - April 5, 2026), book 1 week ahead.

Option 4: Maya Train + Taxi

If you’re departing from Cancun Airport (not the city), the Maya Train is worth considering.

  • From CUN T4: Maya Train departs from the airport terminal — no need to go to the city
  • Fare to Valladolid: ~400-600 MXN
  • Duration: About 1.5 hours to Valladolid station
  • Then: Taxi 17km to Ek Balam (100-120 MXN, 25 min)
  • Total: 500-720 MXN per person

Caveat: Maya Train schedules don’t always align with 8 AM ruins opening. Check the schedule — a 7 AM Cancun departure is ideal; a 9 AM arrival at Valladolid means missing the cool morning window at the ruins.

Option 5: Colectivo (Slowest, Cheapest)

Colectivos (shared minivans) run from Cancun to Valladolid but depart from the Puerto Juárez area in downtown Cancun — not from the Hotel Zone or airport.

  • Cancun → Valladolid colectivo: 80-100 MXN, 2-2.5 hours (stops along the way)
  • Valladolid → Ek Balam: taxi 100-120 MXN (no colectivo to the ruins)
  • Total: 180-220 MXN per person — about 40% cheaper than ADO, but significantly slower and less comfortable

Not recommended for a day trip where you want maximum time at the ruins.

What You’ll See at Ek Balam

Ek Balam archaeological site in Yucatan — lesser-known but still climbable, with intact Mayan stucco carvings at the summit of the Acropolis

Ek Balam (“Black Jaguar” or “Lucero-Jaguar” in Yucatecan Maya) was the capital of a regional kingdom that flourished between 700-900 AD. What makes it exceptional:

The Acropolis (climbable):

  • 32m / 105ft tall — the largest structure in the Ek Balam complex
  • Fully climbable via central staircase with rope assistance
  • At the summit: intact stucco carvings — a winged jaguar deity, serpents, skulls — original work from the 8th century
  • 360° views of Yucatan jungle, no other structures visible

The Jaguar Mask Frieze:

  • Located at the third level of the Acropolis
  • A massive carved mouth (the entrance to the underworld in Maya cosmology) flanked by winged figures
  • One of the best-preserved original stucco friezes in the Yucatan — most Chichen Itza sculptures are reconstructed

Twin Pyramid:

  • Twin structures connected by a sacbé (white limestone causeway)
  • Smaller scale, less climbing, good for seeing the city layout

The Oval Palace:

  • Unusual oval footprint — unique in Maya architecture
  • Associated with high nobility; burials with jade offerings found inside

Practical notes:

  • Entry fee: 250 MXN total (80 MXN INAH + 170 MXN state)
  • Hours: 8 AM - 5 PM daily
  • No timed entry, no advance booking
  • Bring water, hat, sunscreen — zero shade at the summit
  • Cenote Maya (private, near entrance): 120-150 MXN, far less crowded than Ik Kil

Ek Balam vs Chichen Itza: Which Should You Prioritize?

Verdict: If you can only do one, go to Chichen Itza for the iconic scale and UNESCO reputation. If you can do both in a day (rental car recommended), do Ek Balam first in the morning — you’ll likely find it more memorable.

Combining Ek Balam with Valladolid

Ek Balam is 17km north of Valladolid — too close to skip. If you’re taking the bus + taxi route, you pass through Valladolid anyway. Add 1-2 hours:

  • Cenote Suytun (200 MXN, 15 min from Valladolid center): underground cenote with iconic platform photo
  • Cenote Zaci (50 MXN, 2 min walk from Valladolid center): open-air cenote, good for a swim
  • Mercado Municipal: lunch for 40-80 MXN/plate — sopa de lima, longaniza vallisoletana, poc chuc
  • Calzada de los Frailes: colonial street, atmospheric, free
Cenote Suytun near Valladolid — a 200 MXN cenote 15 minutes from the city, easy to add on the Cancun-to-Ek Balam route

Semana Santa 2026 (March 29 - April 5)

If you’re visiting during Holy Week, plan ahead:

  • Ek Balam crowd level: Still low — most Semana Santa visitors go to Chichen Itza or the beach
  • ADO buses: Book tickets in advance (1-2 days ahead minimum from Cancun)
  • Rental cars: Book now if you haven’t — availability at Cancun Airport disappears entirely
  • Valladolid: Expect slightly more visitors in town but the Ek Balam road remains quiet
  • Ley Seca: No dry law at Ek Balam or Yucatan state for Holy Week (Quintana Roo = none, Yucatan = none)
