Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido 2026: 5 Ways to Get There (Bus, Shuttle & New Highway)

Oaxaca City to Puerto Escondido is one of Mexico’s most notorious travel challenges — but the new Autopista Barranca Larga-Ventanilla (Highway 135D) changed everything in 2024. What used to be a 7-8 hour mountain crawl is now a 3 to 3.5 hour drive via toll highway. Most English-language guides haven’t caught up yet. Here’s what actually works in 2026.

The Road That Changed Everything: The New Autopista

For decades, the only overland route from Oaxaca City to Puerto Escondido was Highway 131 through the Sierra Sur — a winding, two-lane mountain road that climbed through San Gabriel Mixtepec, descended dramatically to the coast, and took 7-8 hours on a good day. Motion sickness, narrow curves, the occasional landslide, and night bus schedules made it one of Mexico’s more demanding journeys.

The Autopista Barranca Larga-Ventanilla (Highway 135D) opened in stages between 2022 and 2024, and it is fully operational. This four-lane toll highway cuts southeast from Oaxaca City through the valleys, bypassing the most tortuous mountain terrain, then connects to the Pacific Coast Highway (Highway 200) near Río Grande. From there it’s another 30-45 minutes along the coast to Puerto Escondido.

The route: Oaxaca City → Highway 135D → Río Grande → Highway 200 → Puerto Escondido

Total driving time: 3 to 3.5 hours depending on traffic leaving Oaxaca City.

Tolls: Approximately 250-300 MXN ($12-15 USD) one way.

This is the route now used by most shared shuttles and private transfers. If you’re taking a bus and want the faster option, specifically ask whether it uses the autopista (carretera de cuota) or the old mountain road (libre/serrana).

Cost: 500–700 MXN ($25–35 USD) per person
Time: 3.5–4 hours
Route: New autopista (Highway 135D)

Shared shuttles are the sweet spot for solo travelers and couples. They use the new highway, carry 8-12 passengers, pick you up from your accommodation in Oaxaca City, and drop you near your hotel in Puerto Escondido (usually Zicatela or the Adoquín).

How to book:

  • Book at your hotel/hostel front desk — most work with shuttle companies
  • Book 1-3 days in advance, especially December-March (high season) and Semana Santa
  • Most shuttles depart early morning (6-8 AM) and afternoon (1-3 PM)

Operators (most use the new highway):

  • Oaxaca-Puerto Escondido Shuttle — widely available through hostels
  • Atlántida — departures from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido via new highway
  • Various hostel-coordinated services — Hotel Casa Arnel, La Casa de Don Pablo, and most Oaxaca guesthouses can arrange

What to expect:

  • Van or minibus with AC
  • Hotel-to-hotel service (Oaxaca City center → Puerto Escondido tourist zone)
  • No route narration, basic comfort
  • Faster and far more comfortable than the mountain bus

Tip: The shuttle seat at the front of the vehicle (if available) tends to feel the most comfortable. The new highway is smooth but has some curves as it descends to the coast in the final stretch.

Option 2: Private Transfer

Cost: 2,400–4,000 MXN ($120–200 USD) per vehicle
Time: 3–3.5 hours
Route: New autopista (Highway 135D)

If you’re traveling with 3+ people, a private transfer often costs the same or less per person than a shuttle and gives you direct service on your schedule.

Worth it if:

  • You have 3+ travelers (price per person drops significantly)
  • You have lots of luggage
  • You’re traveling with young children or elderly family members
  • You want to stop along the way at specific points
  • You’re arriving late from a flight and need flexibility

How to arrange:

  • Ask your Oaxaca hotel
  • Book through Viator for vetted drivers
  • WhatsApp-based local driver networks (your hotel can connect you)

Pricing note: 2,400-3,000 MXN is typical for a standard vehicle (4-5 passengers). For a larger SUV or van (6-8 passengers) expect 3,000-4,000 MXN. Always confirm the toll (250-300 MXN) is included.

Option 3: OCC/ADO Bus (Budget Option)

Cost: 280–520 MXN ($14–26 USD) depending on route
Time: 4–8 hours depending on route
Terminal: Central de Autobuses (2nd class) on Prolongación Niños Héroes

This is the cheapest way to get from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido. There’s an important distinction:

Via Mountain Road (Highway 131) — 7–8 hours

The classic route. Departs from the second-class terminal, winds through the Sierra Sur, and arrives at Puerto Escondido bus station near the Adoquín. The journey covers around 245 km but takes 7-8 hours due to the mountain terrain.

  • Cost: 280–420 MXN ($14-21)
  • Departure: Multiple daily departures, including overnight buses
  • Motion sickness warning: The descent through San Gabriel Mixtepec involves dozens of switchback curves. If you’re prone to motion sickness, take medication beforehand or choose the shuttle.

Via New Autopista (Highway 135D) — 4–5 hours

Some newer OCC/ADO departures now use the toll highway. The ticket costs slightly more and is not always clearly labeled.

  • Cost: 380–520 MXN ($19-26)
  • When to use: Ask the ticket counter specifically: “¿Va por la autopista o la serrana?” (Does it go via the highway or the mountain road?)
  • Worth the extra cost if you want the bus comfort level but don’t want the mountain journey

Terminal location: Central de Autobuses, Oaxaca City — reachable by Uber or colectivo from the historic center (30-45 MXN, 15-20 minutes). Not the first-class ADO terminal.

Arrival: Puerto Escondido bus station is a short walk or cheap mototaxi from the Adoquín and most tourist accommodation.

Option 4: Drive (Rental Car)

Cost: Fuel (~300-350 MXN) + tolls (~270 MXN) + rental cost
Time: 3–3.5 hours
Route: Highway 135D then Highway 200

Driving is excellent if you’re planning to explore the Oaxacan coast beyond Puerto Escondido — Mazunte, Zipolite, Huatulco, or Manialtepec lagoon. Having a car at Puerto Escondido itself is less necessary (the town is walkable and mototaxis are cheap), but the drive down is now genuinely pleasant.

Route breakdown:

  1. Oaxaca City → Highway 135D entrance (15-20 min through city traffic)
  2. Autopista towards the coast — four lanes, well-maintained, excellent signage (approx. 2 hours)
  3. Turnoff toward Río Grande → Highway 200 coastal highway (clear signs for Puerto Escondido)
  4. Highway 200 north/west to Puerto Escondido (30-45 minutes along the coast)

Tolls: Expect 250-300 MXN one way. Have cash ready (MXN) — some booths take cards, not all.

Rental car note: Reserve from Oaxaca City airport (OAX) for best availability. Return at OAX when you leave. Some agencies offer drop-off in Puerto Escondido at a one-way fee — ask in advance.

Worth a stop: The viewpoints as you approach the Pacific are stunning on clear days. There’s no single obvious “mirador” on the new autopista, but the descent to the coast from Miahuatlán reveals sweeping views.

Option 5: Flight (OAX → PXM)

Cost: 1,200–3,000+ MXN ($60-150+ USD) per person
Time: 45 min flight, ~3 hours total with transfers
Airports: OAX (Oaxaca) → PXM (Puerto Escondido)

Flying sounds fast, but add it up:

  • Oaxaca City center → OAX airport: 20-30 min, 200-300 MXN by taxi
  • Arrive 60-90 min early for domestic flight
  • 45-minute flight
  • PXM airport → Puerto Escondido town: 20-30 min, 150-250 MXN by taxi

Total time: roughly 3 hours — similar to the shuttle, but at 3-5x the cost.

When flying makes sense:

  • You have very limited time (every hour counts for your trip)
  • You’re in a group and the per-person cost difference is smaller
  • You have lots of luggage and don’t want the van experience
  • You found a genuinely cheap fare (occasional flash sales)

Current carriers (check for updates):

  • AeroCalafia operates Oaxaca-Puerto Escondido on some schedules
  • Aeromexico and VivaAerobus occasionally have connections through Mexico City (CDMX → PXM)
  • Charter services operate seasonally

Check AeroCalafia first for direct OAX-PXM flights before booking through CDMX.

Departure Points in Oaxaca City

For shuttles and private transfers:

  • Most pick up from your hotel or hostel in the historic center
  • If not, common pickup points: Zócalo area, 20 de Noviembre market area
  • Confirm your exact pickup address when booking

For OCC/ADO buses:

  • Second-class terminal (Central de Autobuses): Prolongación Niños Héroes, about 15-20 min from the historic center by Uber/colectivo (20-40 MXN)
  • Not the first-class ADO terminal near the Pedregal neighborhood — that serves different routes

Arrival in Puerto Escondido

Where buses arrive:

  • The OCC/ADO bus station is near the Adoquín pedestrian street — Puerto Escondido’s main tourist strip
  • Most hotels in the tourist zones (Zicatela, La Punta, Rinconada) are a short mototaxi ride (15-30 MXN)

Shuttles drop off:

  • Usually directly at your hotel or a nearby corner — confirm when booking

From PXM airport:

  • Official taxis: 150-250 MXN to Zicatela or central zones
  • Uber: works at Puerto Escondido airport, often cheaper
  • Mototaxi: only practical for very light luggage, but very cheap (50-80 MXN)

Going the Other Direction: Puerto Escondido to Oaxaca

Everything works in reverse. Most of the same shuttle services and buses operate the Puerto Escondido → Oaxaca route with similar times and prices.

One key difference: If you’re heading to Oaxaca for a flight, calculate your time carefully. The new autopista gives you much better predictability than the old mountain road, but:

  • Shuttle: 3.5-4 hours + 1-hour buffer for any delays = leave Puerto Escondido at least 5 hours before your flight
  • Bus (autopista route): same buffer
  • Private transfer: 3-3.5 hours + buffer = 4.5-5 hours before flight recommended

Overnight bus (mountain road): Still a popular option for budget travelers who want to save on accommodation. Departs Puerto Escondido in the evening and arrives Oaxaca in the morning. The route is manageable at night because you won’t be watching the mountain curves go by. However, sleep quality is variable.

Seasonal Considerations

MonthNotes
Dec–FebDry season, ideal road conditions, high demand for shuttles — book ahead
Mar–AprSemana Santa = massive demand spike. Book shuttle/transfer 1-2 weeks ahead
May–JunStart of rainy season — occasional fog on the autopista near the coast, check conditions
Jul–SepHeavy rains can cause slower driving on Highway 200, but autopista itself holds up well
Oct–NovLow season, easier booking, potentially rainy in Oaxaca mountains
