Best Time to Visit Puerto Escondido (2026): Best Months, Rainy Season, and Surf

Puerto Escondido coastline with Zicatela Beach's powerful Pacific waves under clear blue sky, Oaxaca, Mexico

The best time to visit Puerto Escondido is November through May if you want the easiest weather, swimmable mornings, and a simpler first trip. April and May are the smartest value months because you still get strong sunshine, lighter crowds, and lower hotel rates than Christmas or New Year. August and September are better if you care more about turtle arribadas, bioluminescence, and surf than perfect skies.

If you want the shortest possible answer, November is the best all-around month to visit Puerto Escondido, April is the best value month, and September is usually the cheapest month. The rainy season runs from June through October, but that usually means hot sunny mornings and short heavy downpours later in the day, not all-day washouts.

Puerto Escondido is a beach town of roughly 50,000 residents on the Pacific coast of Oaxaca state, Mexico, sitting 7 meters above sea level with a tropical savanna climate. Famous for hosting one of the world’s heaviest beach breaks at Zicatela Beach, it also gives you turtle releases at Bacocho, mass nesting events at nearby Playa Escobilla, bioluminescent lagoon tours at Manialtepec, and easy access to the wider Oaxaca coast. Unlike the Caribbean coast, Puerto Escondido has zero sargassum year-round, so your timing decision is really about weather, surf, wildlife, and budget. If you are still deciding where to stay or what else to pair with this stop, start with our Puerto Escondido travel guide, best beaches in Puerto Escondido, day trips from Puerto Escondido, and best time to visit Oaxaca coast.

Carrizalillo Beach Puerto Escondido protected cove with calm turquoise water and cliffs, perfect for swimming in Oaxaca

🏄 Surf Season: March–October

Puerto Escondido’s surf calendar runs opposite to most world-class breaks. The Southern Hemisphere winter (April–September) generates massive groundswells that travel north across the Pacific and detonate on Zicatela Beach with extraordinary force.

Surf Conditions by Month

PeriodWave HeightSuitabilityNotes
Nov–Feb1–2mBeginners 🟢Best time to learn. La Punta and Carrizalillo calm.
Mar–Apr2–3mIntermediate+ 🟡Building swells. Strong shoulder-season window before the heaviest summer surf.
May–Jun3–4mAdvanced 🔴Southern Hemisphere winter swells arriving.
Jul–Sep3–6mExpert only 🔴Mexican Pipeline peak. International comp season.
Oct2–3mIntermediate+ 🟡Tapering. Great value window.

March through May is the smartest surf window for many non-experts. The 2–3 meter swells at Zicatela are powerful enough for experienced surfers to score real Mexican Pipeline energy, but the ocean is usually less intimidating than peak July through September. Water temperatures stay warm, mornings are clearer, and the town is easier to book than in Christmas peak season.

The Three Beaches Explained

Zicatela (“The Mexican Pipeline”) — World-class beach break for experienced surfers only. The waves break in shallow water with explosive force. Do not swim here regardless of season — currents kill. Watch, photograph, don’t enter the water unless you’re an advanced surfer who knows what you’re doing.

La Punta — Mellow left-hand point break 1km south of Zicatela. Works best November–April when the main swells flatten. Beginners and intermediate surfers should come here.

Carrizalillo — Protected cove with calm, clear water. The only safe swimming beach in Puerto Escondido proper. Steps lead down the cliff. Fills with families, snorkelers, and swimmers. Best April–October for calm water.

Surf schools operate at La Punta and Playa Marinero year-round. Lessons run 300–500 MXN/hour. Most rent boards starting at 150 MXN/hour.

🐢 Sea Turtle Season: June–November

Puerto Escondido sits 50km west of Playa Escobilla, one of the world’s most important olive ridley sea turtle nesting beaches. This is the real wildlife reason to visit in the second half of the year.

What Happens

Arribadas (Spanish: “arrivals”) are mass synchronized nesting events where tens of thousands of female olive ridley turtles emerge from the ocean simultaneously to lay eggs on the same beach. Playa Escobilla is one of only eight places globally where this phenomenon occurs.

Season PhaseDatesScale
Individual nesting beginsJuneSmall groups, 100–500 turtles/night
Arribada season startsJuly–August10,000–50,000 turtles per event
Peak arribadasAugust–October50,000–150,000 turtles per night
Season endsNovemberTapering, occasional late nesting

The scale is hard to overstate: on peak nights, the 2km beach is so covered with turtles that there’s literally no sand visible between them.

Logistics: Playa Escobilla is managed by CONANP and requires a licensed guide. Tours depart from Puerto Escondido starting around 9–10 PM and arrive at the beach around midnight. Cost: 400–600 MXN/person including guide. Night red-light flashlights only — white light disturbs the turtles and guides will enforce this strictly.

In Puerto Escondido itself: La Bacocho beach hosts individual turtle nesting June–November. Local conservation group COANP organizes early morning nest protection and evening release events (baby turtle releases). Free to join — ask at the tourist office on El Adoquín.

🐋 Whale Watching: December–March

Puerto Escondido is not as famous for whale watching as Baja, but humpback whales pass the Oaxaca coast every winter. If you want a beach trip with mostly dry weather plus a realistic chance of seeing whales offshore, December through March is your window.

PeriodWhat to expectBest for
DecSeason startsHoliday travelers who want one extra wildlife activity
Jan–FebMost reliable sightingsFirst-time visitors who want calm weather and boat trips
MarStill possible, less consistentShoulder-season travelers

Most whale trips leave early because the ocean is calmer in the morning. This matters because winter visitors often search for the “best weather” without realizing Puerto Escondido also has a whale season. If you want a dry-season trip with more than just beach time, this is a useful edge over more generic month-by-month guides.

✨ Bioluminescence: July–October (Peak August–September)

Laguna Manialtepec, 18km west of Puerto Escondido, is one of Mexico’s most reliable bioluminescence spots. Dinoflagellates (microscopic organisms) light up brilliant blue when disturbed by motion — oars, fish, hands in the water.

Why it’s extraordinary here: The lagoon’s specific salinity balance from its freshwater/saltwater mix creates ideal conditions for dinoflagellate blooms. On peak nights in August and September, the water glows so intensely that splashing your hand creates a visible blue-green flash visible from the kayak.

Best conditions: New moon periods (darkest nights) in August and September. Avoid full moon weeks — light pollution from the moon washes out the effect.

Tours: Night kayak tours from Puerto Escondido run 350–500 MXN/person. Operators pick you up in the evening, drive 30 minutes to the lagoon, then kayak for 1–2 hours. The return drive gets you back by midnight. Book the day before — tours fill quickly in peak season.

Day vs. night: The lagoon is also excellent for birdwatching by day (300+ species including roseate spoonbills, mangrove warblers, kingfishers). A combined morning birding + evening bioluminescence day trip is popular.

🌊 No Sargassum: The Pacific Advantage

Puerto Escondido has zero sargassum, year-round. This matters more than most guides acknowledge.

Sargassum is Atlantic seaweed blown by currents from the Sargasso Sea into the Caribbean. It affects Cancún, Tulum, Playa del Carmen, and Cozumel (the east coast) from April through October — precisely the months when those beaches are marketed as “high season.” Puerto Escondido’s location on the Pacific coast means it’s structurally immune. No sargassum, ever, any month.

This is one of the best reasons to choose Puerto Escondido over the Caribbean coast if you’re traveling April–October.

The rainy season is not a dealbreaker. Rain in Puerto Escondido arrives in the afternoon (3–5 PM typically), leaves in 1–2 hours, and mornings are sunny. Water is warm year-round (25–29°C). Humidity is the real challenge July–September — early mornings and evenings are comfortable, midday is sticky.

🐳 Whale Sharks: July–October

Whale sharks aggregate in open Pacific waters near Puerto Escondido’s coast during July through October, coinciding with plankton blooms during the warm rainy season. Sightings occur offshore in the waters between Puerto Escondido and Huatulco.

Unlike the Holbox/Isla Mujeres experience (where hundreds of sharks aggregate in shallow, calm waters), Pacific whale shark encounters are on the open ocean — 30–60 minutes offshore by boat. Encounters are less predictable but the scale can be similar (100+ sharks on good days).

Operators run tours from Puerto Escondido for 800–1,200 MXN/person. The same boats often combine whale shark snorkel with open-water dolphin and manta ray sightings.

Getting to Puerto Escondido by Season

By air: Puerto Escondido Airport (PXM) usually has the easiest flight access from Mexico City, with the most reliable schedules on the CDMX route. Seasonal frequencies change, but flying is still the cleanest move if you want to avoid the mountain drive from Oaxaca City. Book earlier for December, January, and Semana Santa because fares jump fast in those windows.

By bus (ADO): From Oaxaca City, the paved Highway 175 route takes 6–7 hours. From Mexico City (TAPO terminal), 12–14 hours overnight. Year-round reliable. Note: Mountain roads have occasional closures June–September during heavy rains — add 2–3 hour buffer when timing arrival.

By car: Highway 200 (Huatulco to Acapulco) is the coastal route. Highway 175 from Oaxaca City passes through mountains and cloud forest. Both are drivable year-round; the mountain section can have fog June–September. Rentals available at Oaxaca City airport.

What to Pack by Season

Dry season (Nov–May):

  • Light linen/cotton clothing
  • Reef-safe sunscreen (SPF50+ — UV index is extreme at Pacific latitudes)
  • Rashguard for surfing/snorkeling
  • Light layer for evenings (20–22°C at night December–February)

Rainy season (Jun–Oct):

  • Same as above plus a packable rain jacket for afternoon showers
  • Water shoes (Manialtepec lagoon, turtle beach hiking)
  • Insect repellent (mosquitoes increase significantly)
  • Red-light headlamp for turtle tours (mandatory, white light forbidden)
  • Dry bags for electronics — humidity and brief rains are relentless
