Option 1: Bus from Querétaro to Mexico City (Best Overall)

Querétaro Central Camionera — the bus terminal serving routes to Mexico City, Guadalajara, San Luis Potosí, and beyond

The bus is the right choice for almost everyone. ETN and Primera Plus offer reclining seats, air conditioning, onboard entertainment, and real toilets — genuinely more comfortable than a car in Mexico City traffic. Buses run every 15–30 minutes during peak hours.

The Terminal That Trips Everyone Up: Terminal Norte, NOT TAPO

This is the single most common mistake travelers make on this route:

Buses from Querétaro arrive at Terminal Norte (also called Central del Norte) — not TAPO, not Terminal Poniente, not Terminal Sur.

  • TAPO = Southeast Mexico (Puebla, Oaxaca, Veracruz, Chiapas) → if your bus arrives there, something went wrong
  • Terminal Norte = North/Bajío Mexico (Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Monterrey, Guadalajara, Bajío region)
  • Terminal Poniente = West (Toluca, Morelia, Guadalajara via MEX-15)
  • Terminal Sur = South (Cuernavaca, Taxco, Acapulco)

Getting from Terminal Norte into Mexico City:

  • Metro: Line 5 (yellow), station “Autobuses del Norte” — runs directly to the historic center
  • Uber: Usually available outside the terminal, 120–250 MXN to Zona Rosa/Condesa/Polanco
  • Taxi: Use authorized taxi booths inside the terminal; agree on price before getting in

Option 2: Driving from Querétaro to Mexico City

Mexico City Centro Histórico and Zócalo — the destination for most travelers arriving from Querétaro via MEX-57D

The MEX-57D is a straightforward autopista with good road surfaces. Leave Querétaro headed south; the road takes you directly into Mexico City’s northern periphery.

Key Route Details

SegmentDistanceApprox Tolls
QRO → San Juan del Río55 km80–100 MXN
San Juan del Río → Tepotzotlán115 km150–200 MXN
Tepotzotlán → CDMX Periferico45 km50–80 MXN
Total MEX-57D tolls~215 km~350–500 MXN

Important: Once you reach Mexico City’s Periférico ring road, traffic can add 45–90 minutes during morning or evening rush hours (7–10 AM and 6–9 PM). If you’re arriving on a weekday, plan for this.

Parking in Mexico City: Valet at hotels runs 150–300 MXN/day. Public parking (estacionamientos) near Centro Histórico charge 40–80 MXN/hour. Avoid street parking in unfamiliar areas.

If you have a car and aren’t in a rush, take the libre (toll-free) Highway 57 and stop at:

  • Bernal (Peña de Bernal): Mexico’s third-largest monolith, 381m. Main street lined with artisan shops and gordita vendors. Entry to the base is free; guided rock-climbing routes available. 50 km from QRO.
  • Tequisquiapan: Charming Pueblo Mágico known for wine, cheese, artisan crafts, and hot spring resorts. The Sunday tianguis market is excellent. Approx 75 km from Querétaro.

This detour adds 1.5–2 hours to your total journey but is worth it with a car.

Option 3: Private Transfer

Peña de Bernal monolith — a natural stopover 50 km from Querétaro en route to Mexico City

Private transfers (QRO → CDMX hotel or airport) typically run 1,200–2,000 MXN for a sedan (up to 4 passengers) and 1,800–2,800 MXN for a van (up to 8). They make sense for groups splitting the cost or for travelers needing a direct airport connection.

Book through: your hotel concierge, or services like Viajes Confort or Mexico Ground Transportation.

Note: Many “private transfers” in Mexico actually use Uber drivers off-app. Make sure you book with a licensed operator if you need guaranteed pickup at a specific time.

Option 4: Cross-State Uber (Last Resort)

Uber operates within Querétaro city but doesn’t natively offer routes to Mexico City in the app. Some drivers will accept the ride at around 1,500–2,500 MXN if you negotiate before getting in. This is unreliable — drivers cancel, prices vary, and you lose the safety protections of a legitimate booking.

Only use this if you’ve missed the last bus (buses stop around midnight) or need an unusual pickup point.

When to Leave Querétaro for Mexico City

Your PriorityBest Departure Time
Avoiding CDMX rush hour arrivalDepart 6–8 AM or after 9 AM; arrive before noon or after 2 PM
Day trip to CDMXFirst bus 6–7 AM, return by 7–9 PM
Airport (MEX Terminal 1/2)Allow 5 hours from QRO departure — or book Terminal Norte → MEX airport taxi
Airport (AIFA/NLU)3.5 hours from QRO departure; AIFA is 30 km north of Terminal Norte

AIFA vs MEX Airport

Mexico City has two airports:

  • MEX (Benito Juárez): Main airport, east of the city — all international flights, most domestic. Metro Line B or Uber/taxi from Terminal Norte.
  • AIFA (Felipe Ángeles/NLU): Budget carriers (VivaAerobus, Volaris cheap fares). Located 50 km north of CDMX — actually closer to Terminal Norte than MEX. The Aerofaro shuttle runs between the two airports (90–120 min).

Always check which airport your flight departs from before booking.
