San Cristóbal to Palenque 2026: Every Way to Get There (Bus, Shuttle & Driving)

Palenque ruins in the Chiapas jungle — 198 km from San Cristóbal de las Casas on Highway 199

San Cristóbal to Palenque is one of the most dramatic journeys in Mexico — you descend from a 2,200 m highland colonial city into dense Mayan jungle, passing two spectacular waterfalls along the way. The 198 km takes 5–6 hours because Highway 199 is a mountain road, not a highway. Plan your day accordingly.

Here’s everything you need to know for 2026.

San Cristóbal de las Casas — tourist shuttles depart from agencies along Real de Guadalupe street

The tourist shuttle is by far the most popular way to make this journey. Minivans or full-size vans with door-to-door pickup from your SCP accommodation.

Where to Book

Walk along Real de Guadalupe (the main tourist street running east from the central plaza) — there are 5–8 agencies selling daily shuttle departures. Prices are nearly identical; compare departure times and whether Agua Azul stops are included.

Also bookable at your hostel front desk or through Viator for guaranteed seats during busy periods.

Bloqueo Policy

Ask the agency specifically: “¿Tienen política de reembolso si hay un bloqueo?” (Do you have a refund policy if there’s a road blockade?) Reputable agencies will offer a reschedule or partial refund. Budget agencies may not.

Option 2: ADO First-Class Bus

Highway 199 through the Chiapas highlands — the main road connecting San Cristóbal and Palenque

ADO runs first-class buses from San Cristóbal’s ADO terminal to Palenque. This is the cheapest option and the most independent.

ADO Terminal in San Cristóbal

The ADO terminal is at Insurgentes 30, about 1 km south of the main plaza — walkable with light luggage, taxi 40–50 MXN.

ADO vs Shuttle — Which is Better?

ADO wins if: you want to save money, you’re arriving in Palenque town (easy taxi to ruins), you prefer air conditioning over social atmosphere.

Shuttle wins if: you want the waterfall stops, flexible timing, door-to-door service, or fellow travelers to share the journey.

The Waterfall Stops

Agua Azul waterfall cascades in Chiapas — turquoise color only appears November through April

Misol-Há — Stop Here Regardless of Season

A 35-meter waterfall with a swimming pool and a cave you can walk behind the cascade. Located 20 km before Agua Azul, 10 km off the highway.

  • Entry: 30 MXN
  • Time needed: 20–40 minutes
  • Season: Worth visiting year-round — the volume is impressive even in dry season
  • Swimming: Yes, pool at the base

Agua Azul — Only Worth It November–April

Chiapas jungle landscape between San Cristóbal and Palenque — the transition from highland pine forest to tropical rainforest

Agua Azul is famous for its series of turquoise blue waterfalls and swimming holes — but that turquoise color depends on dry season conditions.

MonthWater ColorWorth Stopping?
November–AprilTurquoise blue✅ Yes — the iconic experience
May–JuneTransition🟡 Maybe — increasingly cloudy
July–OctoberBrown/grey❌ Skip — not worth the detour

Entry: 80 MXN. Allow 1–2 hours if swimming.

Important note for May–October travelers: Most tourist shuttle operators will still sell you the waterfall package even when the water is brown. Ask specifically about water conditions before paying the premium. Misol-Há is always worth it; Agua Azul is seasonal.

Option 3: Driving Highway 199

Palenque ruins — El Palacio temple complex in the Chiapas jungle

Highway 199 is a proper mountain road — winding, occasionally steep, and genuinely beautiful. It descends from 2,200 m in San Cristóbal through highland pine forest, then drops into the jungle lowlands around Palenque.

Route Details

  • SCP to Palenque: 198 km, 4.5–5.5 hours (no stopping)
  • Highway condition: Paved, generally good, some potholes in rural sections
  • Mountain driving: 3 hours of winding road before flatter jungle terrain
  • Fuel: Fill up in San Cristóbal before departure — gas stations are sparse on Hwy 199
  • Rental car: Return to Mexico City or Mérida — one-way rentals available via RentCars.com

Key Stops Driving Yourself

Ocosingo + Toniná ruins100 km2–3 hrs75-meter climbable pyramid, almost no crowds

Bloqueo Warning for Drivers

If you encounter a road blockade, do NOT attempt to push through. Wait (sometimes they lift within 1–2 hours) or turn back if advised. Have the Palenque hotel number saved — if you’ll be late, call ahead.

Arriving in Palenque

Palenque, Chiapas — the ADO bus terminal is in Palenque town, 8 km from the ruins site

Palenque Town vs. The Ruins

The ADO bus terminal and most shuttles drop you in Palenque town — which is about 8 km from the actual ruins site (Palenque National Park).

From Palenque town to the ruins: colectivo 20–30 MXN, taxi 80–120 MXN.

Most travelers stay in one of two spots:

  • Palenque town — more restaurants and services, less atmospheric
  • La Cañada / El Panchán — jungle hotels 2–3 km from the ruins, howler monkeys included, better atmosphere
