Bacalar departure: The ADO terminal is on the main road through town (Avenida 7 area). From the lagoon waterfront, it’s a 10–15 minute walk or 30-peso taxi.

Schedule: 3–5 departures per day, times vary seasonally. Check ado.com.mx or the ADO app the day before. Early morning (7–9 AM) or midday (12–2 PM) buses are typical.

Journey time: 2 to 2.5 hours

Tulum arrival: The bus arrives at Tulum Pueblo ADO station on Avenida Tulum in the town center — 1km from the main strip of restaurants and about 3–5km from the beach zone.

The Tulum ADO Station Trap

The ADO station in Tulum is not near the beach hotels. If you’re staying on the beach (Hotel Zone side), you’ll need:

  • Taxi from ADO station to beach: 150–250 MXN (negotiate before you get in)
  • Colectivo toward the beach zone (Avenida Cobá direction): 20–50 MXN
  • No Uber — banned in Tulum

If you’re staying in Tulum Pueblo (town center), the ADO station is walkable.

Option 2: Car Rental (Best for Stops)

A rental car makes this stretch genuinely worthwhile — the 200km between Bacalar and Tulum is one of the more interesting drives in the Yucatan.

Base cost: From 600–900 MXN/day. Fuel for the 200km run: roughly 15–18 liters ≈ 360–450 MXN at 2026 PEMEX prices.

Drive time: Approximately 2 hours non-stop.

No tolls: Highway 307 between Bacalar and Tulum has no toll booths — the route is free.

The Maya Train (Tren Maya) is an option between Bacalar and Tulum, with caveats.

Journey time: Approximately 2.5 to 3.5 hours with intermediate stops.

Service status: The southern section (Chetumal–Bacalar–Tulum) has had reliability issues since opening. Some days trains run on schedule; other days services are delayed or cancelled. Always check trentren.mx and have a backup plan (ADO bus).
