MEX vs AIFA — Critical Difference

This trips up many travelers:

MEX (Benito Juárez International):

  • 5-10 km from downtown CDMX
  • Metro Line 1 (Terminal Aérea) or Line 5 (Terminal 2) — 6 MXN to anywhere
  • Uber from MEX: 150-280 MXN to most hotels
  • Every airline flies here; Aeroméxico exclusively

AIFA (Felipe Ángeles, NLU):

  • 50 km north of the city, past Ecatepec
  • The Aerotrén shuttle runs to Buenavista station (about 45 min, ~150 MXN)
  • From Buenavista, Metro to your hotel
  • Total door-to-door adds 1.5-2 hours vs MEX
  • Some VivaAerobus and Volaris routes only. Always cheaper — for good reason.

Rule: Unless AIFA saves you 400+ MXN and you have light luggage and time to spare, choose MEX. The journey to your hotel is dramatically easier.

Departing from CUN

Cancun Airport domestic flights leave from Terminal 3. Arrive at least 1.5 hours before departure for domestic flights.

Getting to CUN from the Hotel Zone:

  • ADO R1/R2 airport bus: 85-100 MXN from Hotel Zone (stops every 20-30 min)
  • Taxi: 150-250 MXN (fixed-rate authorized taxis inside the Hotel Zone)
  • Note: Uber is NOT available at CUN airport — only authorized SITEUR taxis from official booths inside the terminal

Getting to CUN from downtown Cancun:

  • Uber: 80-150 MXN
  • Taxi: 100-180 MXN

Option 2: ADO Bus — Cancun to Mexico City

The bus is the overnight budget option. Nobody talks you into taking it, but it exists:

ServiceDurationPriceDeparture
ADO Direct24-26 hrs900-1,400 MXNCancun ADO Terminal
ADO GL22-24 hrs1,100-1,600 MXNCancun ADO Terminal

Bus terminal: Cancun ADO Terminal at Avenida Tulum No. 24, downtown Cancun (not the Hotel Zone — taxi/colectivo needed).

TAPO arrival: Buses arrive at TAPO (Terminal de Autobuses de Pasajeros de Oriente) in eastern Mexico City. Metro Line 1 (Candelaria) runs from there to most hotels.

When the bus makes sense: If you have very heavy luggage (cheaper than excess baggage fees), need maximum flexibility to stop en route, or are traveling on a truly minimal budget and have 24 hours to spare.

When it doesn’t: Almost every other situation. The math rarely works — a last-minute flight is often the same price, and saves you a full day.

Cancun to Mexico City is 1,700 km via Highway 180/307 through the Yucatán Peninsula, then Highway 150D through Veracruz and Puebla. Total driving time: 18-22 hours.

The problem: Nobody drives this route one-way. It’s too long, too expensive (fuel + tolls ~2,000 MXN), and one-way car rental drops are typically very costly between Cancun and Mexico City.

If you must: Split the journey into 2-3 days. Mérida (3.5 hrs from Cancun via 180D), Villahermosa (12 hrs), Veracruz (14 hrs), Puebla (17 hrs) are logical overnight stops. Highway 180D between Cancun and Mérida is excellent toll road. The rest is slower regional highway.

Uber tip: Uber operates at MEX. At Terminal 1, go down to Level 0 (departures level). At Terminal 2, exit and walk to the designated ride-share pickup area. Traffic around MEX can add 30-60 minutes during rush hour.

Metro tip: MEX has two entrances — Terminal Aérea (Line 1, serves Terminal 1) and Terminal 2 station (Line 5). Each serves one terminal building. The 6 MXN fare takes you anywhere in the city.

AIFA Arrival (if you’re unlucky)

From AIFA, the Aerotrén train runs to Buenavista station (45 min, ~150 MXN). From Buenavista, take the Metrobús or Metro to your hotel. Budget 1.5-2 hours door-to-door from landing.

Safety & Practical Notes

CUN airport: Watch for unofficial “transport” touts outside arrivals. Use only official SITEUR taxi booths (fixed rate, receipt given) or walk outside and use Uber.

MEX airport: One of Latin America’s busiest airports. Pickpocketing and taxi scams near exits. Use only official taxi booths (comprobante/receipt required) or Uber from designated areas. Never accept rides from strangers approaching you in arrivals.

Travel insurance is worth considering before this trip, especially a policy with emergency medical coverage and evacuation support.
