Tulum to Cozumel 2026: The 2-Step Ferry Route (No Direct Crossing)

There is no direct ferry from Tulum to Cozumel. This is the most important thing to know. Every passenger ferry to Cozumel departs from Playa del Carmen, 60km north of Tulum — a 45-75 minute journey before you even reach the pier.

Tulum to Cozumel is a 2-step route: colectivo or taxi to PDC, then the 40-minute UltraMar ferry. Total time door-to-dock: about 2 hours. Total cost on the budget route: 320-380 MXN ($16-19 USD) one way.

The Full Journey: Tulum → Playa del Carmen → Cozumel

The Colectivo Route (Cheapest Option)

Colectivos to Playa del Carmen run continuously from Avenida Tulum at Calle Osiris — a 5-10 minute walk north of the ADO bus station, or a 100-150 MXN taxi ride from the beach zone.

  • Cost: 60-80 MXN per person
  • Departure: Continuously, approximately 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM
  • Journey: 45-60 minutes, stopping along Highway 307
  • Drop-off: They drop on or near Avenida Juárez in PDC, walking distance from the ferry pier

From Tulum Beach Zone: Add a taxi (150-250 MXN) or bicycle ride to reach the colectivo pickup point near the ADO station in Tulum Pueblo.

ADO Bus (Comfortable Option)

ADO buses to Playa del Carmen depart from the Tulum ADO station (centrally located in Tulum Pueblo).

  • Cost: 100-160 MXN per person
  • Frequency: Every 1-2 hours
  • Journey: 55-75 minutes
  • Drop-off: PDC ADO station, a 10-15 minute walk from the Cozumel ferry pier

Book at ado.com.mx or at the station window. No advance booking needed for short routes, but check times before heading to the station.

Taxi (For Groups with Luggage)

If you’re 3+ people with bags, a taxi to PDC can be cost-competitive with ADO:

  • Cost: 200-350 MXN total for the cab (split between passengers)
  • Journey: 40-55 minutes
  • Pickup: Any official taxi rank in Tulum Pueblo or beach zone
  • Tip: Agree on the price before getting in. The legal rate is approximately 250-320 MXN for central Tulum to PDC center.

Rental Car (Best for Day Tripping)

A rental car gives you flexibility for stops along Highway 307 — Akumal’s turtle beach (Km 255), Chemuyil lagoon, or cenotes near PDC.

  • Drive Tulum to PDC: 50-65 minutes (70km on Hwy 307)
  • Park near the ferry pier: Several lots on Calle 2 Norte near the pier charge 50-150 MXN/day
  • Return the car in PDC or continue your route north after Cozumel
  • Compare rental rates →

Step 2: Playa del Carmen → Cozumel Ferry

Once you’re in PDC, the Cozumel ferry pier is at the end of Avenida Juárez, right on the beach. You can’t miss it — it’s the busiest pier on the Riviera Maya.

Departures: Every 1-2 hours. During Semana Santa and peak season (Dec-Jan), ferries can fill up — buy your return ticket as soon as you arrive in Cozumel to avoid being stranded.

Seasickness: The PDC-Cozumel crossing takes you across open Caribbean water. During November-February Norte storms, swells can make the ride bumpy. The modern catamarans have enclosed seating and air conditioning — most people are fine.

What to Do in Cozumel

Cozumel is the world’s second-largest barrier reef after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef — and the best part is that the entire west coast is crystal-clear year-round (no sargassum ever, because the island faces west, away from the Atlantic drift).

Top activities from the PDC pier:

  • Palancar Reef snorkel — 30-minute boat ride, world-class coral walls
  • El Cielo snorkel — shallow lagoon, hundreds of starfish (don’t pick them up)
  • San Gervasio Maya ruins — only site on the island, 30 MXN, genuine 12th-century pilgrimage center
  • Punta Sur — crocodile lagoon, lighthouse, east coast waves
  • San Miguel — the main town, restaurants, souvenirs, 7th Avenue craft market

From Tulum, Cozumel’s focus is underwater. You’ll spend your time snorkeling or diving, not rushing to ruins — you have Tulum’s own ruins 5 minutes away.

The honest assessment: Cozumel deserves more than a rushed day trip from Tulum. The 2-step journey means you arrive on the island around 10:00-11:00 AM if you leave Tulum at 8:00 AM — leaving you 5-6 hours maximum. That’s enough for a reef snorkel tour, but you’ll feel rushed.

If you’re already staying in PDC, Cozumel as a day trip is seamless and absolutely worth it.

Getting from the PDC Ferry Pier to Cozumel’s Attractions

San Miguel (the main town) is right at the Cozumel ferry dock — you walk off the boat into the town center.

Getting around Cozumel:

  • Taxis: Abundant, fixed-rate zones. Town → Palancar Reef area: 150-250 MXN
  • Scooter rental: 400-700 MXN/day — great for the south circuit
  • Golf carts: 600-1,000 MXN/day — slow but fun for exploring town and west coast
  • Bicycle: 100-200 MXN/day — only practical for short distances in town

No Uber in Cozumel — just like Tulum. Taxis are the standard and they use fixed rates by zone.

Semana Santa Warning (March 29 – April 5, 2026)

Tulum ruins on the Caribbean coast — starting point for the 2-hour journey to Cozumel via Playa del Carmen

If you’re traveling during Semana Santa week:

  • Colectivos fill up fast — arrive at the departure point 15-20 minutes early
  • Ferry capacity: Ferries sell out on peak days (Good Friday April 3, Easter Sunday April 5) — book online at ultramarferry.com or arrive at the PDC pier 45 minutes before departure
  • Return ferry: Buy your return ticket as soon as you land in Cozumel — the last ferry back on Semana Santa evenings is full by 3:00 PM
  • Cozumel is less crowded than Cancun/Tulum during Semana Santa (most Mexican families stay on the mainland) — the island actually gets quieter, not more chaotic

Combining with a Broader Yucatán Route

Tulum to Cozumel works perfectly as part of a Riviera Maya circuit:

The Classic Loop (5-7 days): Tulum → [Cobá ruins, still climbable] → Valladolid → Chichen Itza → Cancun → Isla Mujeres → Playa del Carmen → Cozumel → back to Tulum

The Snorkel Circuit (2-3 days based in PDC): Playa del Carmen → Akumal (turtles, 30 min south) → Tulum ruins (1hr south) → Cozumel (ferry day trip) → Gran Cenote (back toward Tulum)

Cenote Dos Ojos near Tulum — often combined with a Cozumel snorkel trip for a full Caribbean week
