Oaxaca in July 2026: Guelaguetza, Weather & Is It Worth It?
Should You Visit Oaxaca in July?

Yes — with caveats.
If you’re visiting for Guelaguetza (July 20 and 27), Oaxaca in July is the best version of itself. The city is decorated, street performances run every evening, markets overflow with regional products, and the energy is unlike any other month. Plan months ahead.
If you’re visiting for general travel, July is fine with adjusted expectations: mornings are dry and excellent for ruins and markets; afternoons bring 1–3 hours of rain that clears by 4–5 PM. Evenings are beautiful. The city is greener than any other month. Hotels are reasonably priced outside Guelaguetza week.

Oaxaca Weather in July
Oaxaca City sits at 1,550 meters (5,085 feet), which keeps temperatures comfortable even in the hottest months.
July weather stats (Oaxaca City):
- Morning temperature: 21–24°C (70–75°F)
- Afternoon temperature: 26–29°C (79–84°F)
- Evening temperature: 17–19°C (63–66°F)
- Rain: 100–140mm for the month, concentrated in afternoon storms (1–3 PM)
- Humidity: Moderate — much lower than coastal Mexico
- Sun hours: 5–6 per day (mornings reliably clear)
The rainy season reality: Rain in Oaxaca City is not the all-day monsoon that plagues some destinations. It’s almost predictably afternoon: skies cloud up after noon, rain falls for 1–2 hours, clear by 4–5 PM. Ruins are best visited before 11 AM (also better for photography and beating tour buses). Markets and mezcal tastings are excellent afternoon activities during rain.
Oaxaca coast in July (Puerto Escondido, Huatulco, Mazunte):
- Temperature: 30–34°C (86–93°F), high humidity
- Waves: Puerto Escondido has excellent surf swells (Zicatela Pipeline peak season)
- Sea turtles: Olive ridley arrivals at Playa Escobilla begin June and peak August–October
- Note: The new Autopista Barranca Larga (Hwy 135D) cuts the Oaxaca City–Puerto Escondido drive to 3–3.5 hours — the old mountain road took 7–8.

Hierve el Agua: The July Closure Warning
Hierve el Agua — the petrified waterfall site in the mountains east of Oaxaca City — is one of the most photographed sites in the state. But it’s also subject to unpredictable closures from June through October due to an ongoing territorial dispute between two neighboring communities: San Isidro Roaguía and San Lorenzo Albarradas.
During July specifically: the site may or may not be open on any given day. Check recent reports on TripAdvisor or Facebook travel groups for “Hierve el Agua abierto” within 48 hours of your planned visit. Don’t make it the anchor of your trip in July — treat it as a bonus if open.
When planning, our Hierve el Agua guide includes the full explanation of the dispute and how to check current status.
