Oaxaca in July 2026: Guelaguetza & Rain Tips

Should You Visit Oaxaca in July?

Oaxaca City street market with marigolds and colonial buildings in rainy season green surroundings
July’s rainy season keeps the Sierra Norte mountains spectacularly green — the city at its most alive

Yes, if you plan around the festival calendar and the rain pattern.

If you’re visiting for Guelaguetza, Oaxaca in July is the year’s biggest cultural trip. The 2026 main Monday shows are expected on July 20 and July 27, with related parades, concerts, mezcal events, food fairs, and community performances filling the weeks around them. Book rooms early if those dates matter.

If you’re visiting for general travel, July still works with adjusted expectations. Mornings are the prime window for Monte Albán, markets, walking tours, and valley day trips. Afternoons often bring rain, which makes museums, mezcal tastings, chocolate workshops, long lunches, and covered markets smarter than exposed ruins.

Oaxaca Weather in July

Oaxaca City sits at 1,550 meters (5,085 feet), which keeps temperatures comfortable even in the hottest months.

July weather stats (Oaxaca City):

  • Morning temperature: 21–24°C (70–75°F)
  • Afternoon temperature: 26–29°C (79–84°F)
  • Evening temperature: 17–19°C (63–66°F)
  • Rain: 100–140mm for the month, concentrated in afternoon storms (1–3 PM)
  • Humidity: Moderate — much lower than coastal Mexico
  • Sun hours: 5–6 per day (mornings reliably clear)

The rainy season reality: Rain in Oaxaca City is usually not an all-day washout. The practical pattern is morning sun, clouds building after lunch, then one or two hours of rain before the evening improves. Ruins are best before 11 AM, both for weather and tour-bus timing. Markets, museums, chocolate workshops, and mezcal tastings are better afternoon anchors. For a countrywide pattern check, use our Mexico rainy season guide before locking in a longer July route.

Oaxaca coast in July (Puerto Escondido, Huatulco, Mazunte):

  • Temperature: 30–34°C (86–93°F), high humidity
  • Waves: Puerto Escondido has excellent surf swells (Zicatela Pipeline peak season)
  • Sea turtles: Olive ridley arrivals at Playa Escobilla begin June and peak August–October
  • Note: The Autopista Barranca Larga (Hwy 135D) usually makes the Oaxaca City-Puerto Escondido drive far shorter than the old mountain road, but landslides, maintenance, and holiday traffic can still affect timing in rainy season. Compare the coast legs with Puerto Escondido in July and Huatulco in July if you are choosing between surf, bays, and lower-stress beach time.

Guelaguetza: The Reason Most People Come to Oaxaca in July

The 2026 main shows are expected on Monday, July 20 and Monday, July 27, with morning and afternoon sessions at the Cerro del Fortín auditorium. The related Donají ballet normally performs on the preceding Sundays, which should be July 19 and July 26 in 2026.

Tickets usually go on sale in late spring through the official sales channel and the best sections can move fast. Paid seats are easiest if you want certainty; free sections exist, but they require an early lineup and patience. See our full Guelaguetza 2026 guide for ticket strategy, free alternatives, what each region performs, and how to plan your full trip around the festival.

If you’re visiting just outside the main Mondays: do not write July off. The city still has a festival mood through much of the month, with calendas, community events, cultural exhibits, markets, and mezcal-related programming around the main dates. You get some atmosphere without the hardest hotel pressure.

Best Things to Do in Oaxaca in July

Morning (dry, cool, ideal for outdoor sites):

  • Monte Albán: Open 8 AM. Arrive early to beat tour groups arriving from Oaxaca City at 9–10 AM. Shuttle 65 MXN from city. Complete Monte Albán guide.
  • Tlacolula Sunday market: 30 km, ADO bus (45 min). Best regional market in the Central Valleys — mole paste, chapulines, Zapotec textiles, mezcal by the liter.
  • Teotitlán del Valle: Weaving village. Natural dye workshops with cochineal and indigo. Easiest morning before the midday rain.
  • Mitla: 45 km. The mosaic fretwork buildings are unique in the Americas — no-mortar stone inlay. Worth visiting before 11 AM.

Afternoon rain shelter:

  • Mezcal bars and palenques in the city: In Situ (50+ artisanal labels), Mezcalogia, La Clandestina. Best mezcal tasting in Mexico, indoor, perfect for rainy afternoons.
  • Oaxacan chocolate workshops: Several operators (Itanoni, Casa Cacao) run 2-hour afternoon workshops — chocolate grinding, mole ingredient breakdown.
  • Oaxacan textile markets: Mercado de los Abastos and Mercado Artesanal on 20 de Noviembre are covered and ideal for afternoon browsing.
  • Museo de Arte Prehispánico Rufino Tamayo: One of Mexico’s best pre-Columbian collections, entirely indoors.

Full-day combinations:

  • Valley circuit: Monte Albán (morning) + El Árbol del Tule (giant cypress, 2,000 years old, 14 km from city) + Teotitlán textiles + Santiago Matatán mezcal palenques + Mitla. Needs rental car. RentCars for comparison.
  • Pacific coast: Use Hwy 135D toward Puerto Escondido if road conditions are good, then build in buffer time during rainy season. Beaches, surf, turtle activity, and bioluminescence can all be part of a two-night coast add-on. See the Puerto Escondido travel guide before routing the coast into a city trip.

Hierve el Agua: The July Closure Warning

Hierve el Agua — the petrified waterfall site in the mountains east of Oaxaca City — is one of the most photographed sites in the state. But it’s also subject to unpredictable closures from June through October due to an ongoing territorial dispute between two neighboring communities: San Isidro Roaguía and San Lorenzo Albarradas.

During July specifically: the site may or may not be open on any given day. Check recent reports on TripAdvisor or Facebook travel groups for “Hierve el Agua abierto” within 48 hours of your planned visit. Don’t make it the anchor of your trip in July — treat it as a bonus if open.

When planning, our Hierve el Agua guide includes the full explanation of the dispute and how to check current status.

Getting to Oaxaca in July

Fly: OAX airport has frequent flights from Mexico City and other Mexican hubs. Book flights for the Guelaguetza weekends as early as possible because July 19-20 and July 26-27 are the tightest arrival windows.

Bus from Mexico City: ADO Platinum from TAPO terminal, 6–7 hours overnight, 700–1,100 MXN. Comfortable for budget travelers. Our Mexico City to Oaxaca guide compares bus, flight, rental car, and private transfer options in more detail.

From Puerto Escondido or Huatulco: Hwy 135D has made Oaxaca City-Puerto Escondido routing much easier than it used to be, but July rain can still slow the road. Avoid same-day tight flight connections if you are coming from the coast.

Airport to city: No Uber or DiDi in Oaxaca. Official colectivos (135/210 MXN) or taxis especiales (490/715 MXN) from the airport. See our Oaxaca airport transportation guide.
